Cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more accessible to everyday Americans. As a result, it has also become more and more confusing to know which procedure is right for you! This is especially true for fat removal. Are AirSculpt, BodyTite, CoolSculpting, Lipo 360, Renuvion, SculpSure, SlimLipo, SmartLipo, TriSculpt, and a tummy tuck more or less the same thing? Is non-invasive, minimally-invasive, or surgical the best approach?
Read on as we help you clear up the confusion.
Fat Removal vs Skin Tightening
Even though there are all these treatments to get rid of your belly (and other) fat, there are basically two big picture options: You can have your fat removed and leave it at that, or you can have your fat removed and also have your skin tightened.
In other words, fat removal is not the same as skin tightening. Skin tightening is an add-on to fat removal that will improve your results. Whether you opt for non-invasive fat removal (like CoolSculpting or SculpSure) or minimally-invasive fat removal (like any type of liposuction), your skin will not automatically get tightened. This may not be a problem if you’re young and have not gone through pregnancy or childbirth, as your skin might be elastic enough to shrink down to your slimmer contour.
Tummy Tucks are the Exception
The only exception here is the tummy tuck. Tummy tuck surgery does involve the removal of both fat and excess skin tissue. This means you will slim down and achieve beautiful, taut skin. If you’re not opposed to a surgical procedure with a longer recovery and longer scar, a tummy tuck is the best way to accomplish both goals.
Liposuction, or Liposuction plus Skin Tightening?
But back to non-surgical procedures. As we have shown, fat removal – whether via liposuction or via a non-invasive treatment – is not the same as skin tightening. However, the great thing about liposuction is that you can easily add on skin tightening without making the procedure much longer. The reason for this is that both liposuction and skin tightening require almost exactly the same prep work. The plastic surgeon applies a “wetting solution” under the skin to cover the entire treatment area. This has the effect of numbing the area and loosening the tissues. He or she can then either suction off the fat (i.e. liposuction) using a suction cannula, or shrink the tissues under the skin using a slightly different cannula powered by radio frequency.
For almost all patients, it makes a lot of sense to apply both lipo and skin tightening to achieve the best results. The procedure will be only marginally longer, you won’t be adding any extra recovery time, and the added cost is typically affordable.
Could you have liposuction by itself? Absolutely. But again, your skin won’t look as aesthetically pleasing as it will with added skin tightening. If you think of your tummy as an inflated balloon, liposuction without skin tightening is akin to letting out the air and being left with a shriveled balloon.
Skin Tightening by Itself?
Vice versa, could you have only skin tightening without the liposuction? While this is technically possible, it makes even less sense. Almost everyone has a little bit of extra fat to spare, and to not remove it prior to tightening the skin would not give you the slim figure you desire. Why leave a bulge – even with nice smooth skin – when you could get rid of it in one swoop?
At NuBody Concepts, we perform both BodyTite and Renuvion skin tightening in conjunction with liposuction. Both use the aforementioned radio frequency powered energy to contract tissues under the skin while leaving the surface intact.
Renuvion is different from BodyTite in that it adds bursts of helium plasma to the radio frequency. This heats up a very targeted area to an even higher temperature in a shorter timeframe, allowing the plastic surgeon to proceed faster. In reality, this is not something to worry about. Your main focus should be the outcome, which is determined by the surgeon’s skill with his or her preferred equipment.
Why Liposuction is Better Than Non-Invasive Fat Removal
A final word about non-invasive fat removal options like CoolSculpting and SculpSure, which we mentioned earlier. Yes, they require even less downtime than minimally-invasive procedures and can be administered without local anesthesia, but they have two main drawbacks compared to liposuction: 1) you will need several repeat treatment to see a noticeable effect, and 2) they do not include skin tightening. We see a good amount of patients who are opting for BodyTite and Renuvion to fix undesirable CoolSculpting results.
If you want to get the most from your body contouring procedure (and are not ready for a tummy tuck), then you will achieve the best results by combining liposuction with skin tightening.
